Small Group Programs
Small Group Orton-Gillingham Lessons
For
some students struggling with acquiring language, small group lessons
are suitable. While many of our students require 1:1 intervention,
some students may work well in a small, carefully matched group of 2 or 3 students with
similar skill acquisition needs and similar processing styles.
Contact our centre to find out if there is a group suitable for your
child.
Orton-Gillingham Math This ongoing small group math program caters to the children’s
learning needs. Lessons are structured, sequential and use manipulatives
to make abstract math concepts more concrete. Orton-Gillingham math is
considered an hands-on multisensory approach to math. Call 604.987.6760
for more information about our Orton-Gillingham Math programs.

Summer Camp at REACH
If
your child has been struggling to succeed with basic academic skills,
with or without a diagnosed learning difficulty, we may be able to
help. Our specialists understand learning difficulties and students who
struggle with learning in general. This academic summer camp is
designed to help those struggling students clarify some basic skills
before returning to school in the fall, and to help prevent the “big
slide” in skills that occurs with the long summer vacation.
Each
day at summer camp for school aged children includes three specific
small group instructional blocks. Our Orton-Gillingham block emphasizes
and teaches specific sound/ symbol relationships, common spelling rules
and blending sounds or syllables to improve decoding (reading). Our
Writing Skills block enlightens our students about parts of speech, the
basic structure of sentences or paragraphs (depending on level of
group), how to overcome “writer’s block” and brainstorm for ideas, and
how to overcome the fear of producing written work. Some students, such
as those with diagnosed written output difficulties, will be given
strategies to enable their writing, including scribing if
necessary. Our Multisensory Math block works on clarifying basic
math skills, according to the level of the group. Math skills are woven
into real-world situations so students understand the bigger picture of
why these skills are necessary.
Students have two breaks
each day, including a snack break and a yoga/ brain gym break,
emphasizing strategies for refocusing and overcoming and dealing with
anxiety.
With small group instruction in a highly supported
environment (just over 3:1 ratio of staff to students), our students
experience success while bringing up their skills.
Before a
student can acquire reading and spelling skills, their foundation
skills must be strong. Our Little Learners summer program is designed
to help our kindergarten-aged students with the basic foundations
necessary to enable success with literacy. This program provides
teaching with specific phonological awareness skills, including each
sub-skill. Children work on identifying sounds, placement of sounds and
manipulation of sounds in the English language. Games and activities
bring in basic sound/ symbol relationships and letter formations,
setting our students on the path for success when they return to school
in the fall, all while enjoying a summer camp environment.
